Designer Biography

Costume Designer Jennifer Irwin's career spans 30 years constructing & designing costumes for drama, opera, film and in particular for dance & ballet. Jennifer designs regularly for all of the major Australian companies and has also designed some of the largest scale spectacular productions ever staged in Aust. Including the 'Awakening' the Indigenous segment of Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony, Co- designed all the costumes for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony, The Official Commemorative Ceremony marking the Centenary of Australian Federation & the Olympic Arts 'Festival of the Dreaming' Opening.


For Sydney Theatre Co: Stockholm, Soulmates, Up for Grabs, The Virgin Mim, Cyrano de Bergerac. 
Her dance credits include 35 works for the Sydney Dance Co (including Berlin, Free Radicals, Fornicon, Synergy with Synergy, Piano Sonata, Shining, Protecting Veil, Shades of Gray, Directors Cut, Ever After Ever).


For The Australian Ballet: Alchemy, Rites, Subtle Sequence Of Revelation, Aesthetic Arrest, 'X', Totem, Amalgamate, Narrative of Nothing & Waramuk. 
Jennifer has designed and constructed Bangarra's costumes for the last 25 years( Terrain, Patyegarang, Ochres, Fish, Corroborree, Mathinna, Walkabout, X300, Uniapon, Bush, Skin, True Stories and Fire included).


For Belvoir Theatre Company: 'Keating' the Musical, Gethsemane, Gates Of Egypt, The Laramie Project, Stuff Happens, My Zinc Bed.


Opera Australia: Romeo & Juliet. Adelaide Festival Trust: 'Ainadamar' the Opera.


'Vast' for the Australian Bi-centenary, involving: SDC, WA Ballet, Queensland Ballet & ADT. For WA Ballet: Munjarli, Kulmuk & Game Over. 
For Singapore Dance Theatre: Oneiros. Royal New Zealand Ballet: Protecting Veil.


Film Costume Cutting credits: The Matrix, Mission Impossible II, Red Planet, Looking for Natalie Wood, Strictly Ballroom and Romeo and Juliet.
In 1984 she was awarded a theatre Board Grant to study at La Scala Opera, Milan, Italie. In 2001 she was awarded a Centenary Medal for service to community and has been nominated for 10 Green Room and 2 Helpmann Awards. Awarded Best Costume Design for The Australian Production Design Guild 2012 & 2013.

Jennifer designed the costumes for the International Box Office Sensation 'Dirty Dancing' playing on London's West End, Berlin, Toronto, Utrecht, Chicago, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Vienna, Brussels, Boston, Capetown, Hong Kong, Washington, Johannesburg & LA.
 Jennifer's many successful collaborations are reflected in her inclusion in the Who's Who of Australian Women for "contribution to design in Australia".
