Designer Biography
In 1989 Kim Carpenter, former co-artistic director of Nimrod Theatre (now Belvoir) set up Theatre of Image while his former colleagues, John Bell set up his Bell Shakepeare and Neil Armfield became artistic director of Belvoir. Kim took a more difficult road in setting up a visual theatre company that several years later became a visual theatre company exclusively for families and children - in direct contrast to the TIE (theatre-in-education) diet of the day. ToI's mission is to bring children out of schools and into theatres to give them the full theatre experience.
In the past 17 years TOI has produced: 16 new main-stage works; 3 national tours; 6 smaller new works; 8 NSW regional/interstate tours; 10 works from repertoire and 4 international tours; won 2 Helpmanns for Best Presentation For Children and 3 AWGIEs and has been included in 5 major Australian arts festivals: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra.
