The National Institute of Dramatic Art - NIDA DESIGN COURSE

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Design for Performance) course at NIDA offers students with a passion for design within the performing arts, a unique opportunity to explore their interests within a collaborative, conservatoire environment.

A small group of highly talented students study this three-year full-time course work collaboratively to realise their own design projects. The undertake specialist education and training in set design, costume design, the design of properties and lighting design, as well as acquiring technical skills in model-making, rendering, virtual visualisation techniques, manual drafting, computer-aided drafting (CAD) and life drawing. They also investigate the social, historical and cultural contexts informing contemporary art, architecture and design, the history of costume and clothing, and colour theory.

The BFA (Design for Performance) prepares students to succeed as designers in the arts and entertainment industries, including theatre, opera, musicals, dance, film and television, and events.

THE PAPER COSTUME PROJECT:

The Paper Costume project undertaken by NIDA's BFA (Design for Performance) students begins with an investigation into a dramatic text. Students design expressionistic/abstract costumes , paying particular attention to the silhouette of the characters. These designs are then translated into bizarre and grotesque conceptual realisations made primarily of paper and card, and sculpturally shadowed and painted. The project culminates with the students presenting their final designs as a costumed public performance.
