Thomas Rupert

Designer Biography

Thomas Rupert (1967) studied Fashion- and Theatre costumedesign at the Academy of Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. After that he pursued his education at the Academy for the Arts in Maastricht at the departement Theatrical design.

Immediately after his studies he started working as an assistent costumedesigner for the Opera am Reim in Düsseldorf, Germany.

From 1992 until 1998 he worked as set- and costumedesigner at Het Kruis van Bourgondië in Maastricht.

Thomas Rupert has been working with many directors and companies such as Lodewijk de Boer, Hans Croiset, Theatergroep Hollandia, Het Arsenaal, Stella Den Haag, Introdans, Toneelgroep Oostpool, Het Toneel Speelt and Het Nationaal Toneel.

Since 1998/1999 Thomas Rupert worked as the main designer for Alize Zandwijk at the Rotheater: 'Nachtasiel'(1998), 'Keefman'(1999), 'Oresteia"(2000), '5000 vingers'(2000), 'Leonce en Lena'(2001), 'Portia Caughlan'(2002), 'De Bruiloft'(2003), 'Meiskes en Jongens'(2005), 'Onschuld'(2006) and 'King Lear'(2007) .'Baal (2008) 'Burning' (2010)

'Death of a salesman' (2011) .'Oeidipus' (2012)."Tears of joi dry faster' (2013) 'Bossen' (2014)

For the setdesign of Burning he was nominated for the Nicolaas Wijnbergprize.

For the Thalia Theater in Hamburg he designed set and costumes for the productions 'Iwanow'(2004), 'Summerguests'(2005), 'Cat on a hot tin roof'(2006) and 'Happiness'(2008). For the setdesign of 'Summerguests' he received the Rolf Marres Prize.

He designed the set for the play 'Joseph and his brothers 'for Deutches Theater Berlin, And also the set and the costumes for 'Cherry Garten' for Theater Bremen

Since 1995 he has been working as a guest teacher at the Academy for the Arts in Maastricht and the Wimbledon School of Art in London for the departement Theatrical design. And the last 4 years also for the University Mimar Sinan in Istanbul.

Thomas Rupert is since 1996 the main setdesigner for the contemporary dancecompany Conny Janssen Danst in Rotterdam.

Since 2005 he is working with Nils Criste as setdesigner

for Ballet Mainz, Ballet Kiel , IntroDans Arnhem , Royal Swedisch Ballet , Wiener Staats Ballet , Queens Land Ballet in Brisbain, Ballet Am Rhein in Dusseldorf , Staats Theater Hannover, Singapore Ballet, and Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires
