Designer Biography

A theatre, opera, ballet, film and television set designer, she is also known for her work in Denmark, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States and many other countries where Polish theatres have given performances. She is a graduate of the Architecture Department at the University of Technology and the Stage Design Course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. She debuted with the stage design for Tadeusz Różewicz's Białe małżeństwo (White Marriage) at the Współczesny Theatre in Wrocław, and repeated the work at one of the U.S. theatres. Since then she has become one of Poland's most popular stage designers, invited by the most famous Polish theatre directors and theatres.

! She has prepared over 100 different productions in Poland and abroad. She has worked with such directors as Henryk Baranowski, Kazimierz Braun, Adam Hanuszkiewicz, Jerzy Jarocki, Maciej Prus, Marek Weiss-Grzesiński and Krzysztof Zaleski, designing the sets for an extremely varied repertoire, from Shakespeare to Genet and Różewicz.

She worked for many years with the founder of Polish pantomime theatre, Henryk Tomaszewski, with whom she produced The Knights of the Round Table, The Prodigal Son and A Midsummer Night's Dream in Wrocław. She has also worked with him in Bonn, where they jointly produced Christoph Glück's Orfeo ed Euridice. She has worked with most of Poland's opera theatres and with Ewa Wycichowska's Polish Dance Theatre. For the National Opera, she has prepared the stage design for Gounod's Faust, for Rossiniana, Bolero and Carmina burana choreographed by Antal Fodor, and for Verdi's Rigoletto. A few years ago, together with the Theatre of Expression in Gdynia and in association with Wojciech Misiuro, she created a completely original production that displayed her extraordinary imaginative ability to create stage characters through costume. Her individual exhibitions of stage designs have been presented in Paris and Darmstadt. She has also taken part in a number of international exhibitions in Poland and abroad. In 2001, she created the stage design for the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera production of Moniuszko's Haunted Manor directed by Mikołaj Grabowski, in 2007 she prepared the stage design for Mozart's In the Land of Magic Flute and in 2008 the costumes for Ptaszyńska's Magic Doremik.
