Miodrag Tabacki

Designer Biography

Miodrag Tabački graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and the Academy of Applied Arts, Department of Set Design in Belgrade. He has been working independently since 1973 and has done more than two hundred of set designs and more than a hundred of costume designs for drama, opera, ballet and puppet performances for repertory theatres, festivals, and non-formal groups. As a stage and costume designer, he worked as a guest in most Yugoslav theatres as well as in Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Macedonia, Slovakia, Slovenia.

For his work, he received numerous awards: Sterija Award for stage design at the Yugoslav Theatre Festival in Novi Sad in 1982, 1996, 1998, 1999 and Sterija Award for Artistic Opus in 2009, Ardalion award for the best stage design at the Yugoslav Theatre festival in Užice in 1996, 1997, 1888, 2000 and 2003, Gold Laurel Wreath at the Festival of Small and Experimental Scenes in Sarajevo in 1982, Gold Medal for the best stage design at Ballet Biennial in Ljubljana in 1985, Silver Plaque for stage design at the Ninth International Triennial of Stage and Costume Design in Novi Sad in 1990, Award of ULUPUDS for Artistic Opus in 1987, Award of SANU of Ivan Tabaković Fund in 2004 and many others. He has the status of Eminent Artist in ULUPUDS and is an honourable member of UPIDIV. He was a winner of Joakim Vujić Statuette - award for artistic opus, and many others.

Monograph Miodrag Tabački, published by Clio in Belgrade received Golden Pen Award of USITT in 2006.

He had independent exhibitions in Novi Sad in 1976, 1987 and 2006; Skopje in 1977 and 1992; Split in 1983 and 1987; Belgrade in 1984, 1990, 1992, 1998, 1999 and 2003; Sarajevo in 1984; Zagreb in 1985; Paris in 1987; Prague in 1999; Budapest in 2000; New Orleans in 2002; Bratislava in 2009... He participated in group shows domestically and abroad: Prague Quadrennial in 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991 and 1999; The International Triennial of Stage and Costume Design in Novi Sad in 1979, 1984, 1990 and others.

He has been doing pedagogic work since 1973. He is a full-time professor at the Faculty of Theatre Arts in Belgrade, a guest professor at Trent University in Nottingham, Great Britain, Ohio University, Athens, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA and others.As an active member of YUSTAT and USITT

He participated in Symposiums of OISTAT in Seoul, Korea in 1997, Tokyo, Japan in 1998, Tel Aviv, Israel in 1999, Manila, the Philippines in 2000, New Orleans, USA in 2002…
