Bill Brewer

Designer Biography

Bill Brewer has worked professionally as a designer, director and educator for 30 years.

With his MFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, Bill has designed for Theatre, Ballet, Opera, Film and Television across the country and abroad. Notable productions include Cathy Rigby's Peter Pan and Sweeney Todd starring Jean Stapleton.At Playmakers Repertory Theatre Bill recently designed Into the Woods. At Triad Stage Bill has designed the New Music Trilogy, Ain't Mis Behavin', The Illusion, Wait Until Dark, Trouble in Mind, The Snow Queen and All's Well that Ends Well. Bill has also designed for Berkley Repertory Theatre, San Jose Civic Light Opera, Berkley Shakespeare Theatre, Nebraska Repertory Theatre, Minnesota Repertory Theatre, The Unicorn Theatre, American Stage, The Waterfront Playhouse and Orlando Repertory. Bill has designed for Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Ballet West, Redwood Empire Ballet and numerous regional dance companies throughout the United States. Recent work's include a ballet for Theatre Dejazet, Paris France, a series of dance pieces in Milan, Italy and a dance film with choreographer, Michael Foley about the last hours of the life of Joan of Arc, filmed on location in and around Paris, France. Bill has designed numerous projects for PBS and worked as an Assistant Designer for Lucas Film's Howard the Duck, as well as Willow and Tucker, a man and his dreams.

Mr. Brewer's designs have twice been included in the United States' exhibit to the Prague Quadrennial, and thrice been selected for publication in TD&T. Bill's costume designs for The School for Scandal were included in the gallery exhibit at World Stage Design in Toronto, 2005.

As a Director, Bill's production of Side by Side by Sondheim ran for 500 performances in San Francisco and received the Bay Area Critics Award two consecutive years.

Other notable productions include Dames at Sea and The Odd Couple, Man of La Mancha, Godspell and Pippin, The Rocky Horror Show.

Bill is the Director of Costume Programs at University of North Carolina School of the Arts and has taught at Carnegie-Mellon University, San Francisco State University, University of Minnesota, Duluth and the University of South Florida, Mr. Brewer also guest designs and conducts workshops at Regional Theatres and Universities across the country.

Bill is a non-active member of Actors Equity and an active member of United Scenic Artists 829.
