Designer Biography

Susan has designed over 300 productions worldwide for theatre, opera, film and dance.

London: costumes for Spring Awakening (Novello); Flying Karamazov Brothers' 4Play (Vaudeville); August Wilson's Jitney (National Theatre). Scenery, costumes and associate director for Athol Fugard's My Children! My Africa!; A Place with the Pigs (National Theatre); Valley Song (Royal Court); Playland (Donmar). Set and costume designer for Athol Fugard's Sorrows and Rejoicings (Tricycle).

Directorial collaborators include: Michael Mayer, James Lapine, Robert Falls, James MacDonald, Richard Nelson, the late Garland Wright, Mark Lamos, Frank Galati, Selina Cartmell, Des McAnuff, Bartlett Sher, Doug Wright, Laurie Anderson, Tony Kushner, Garry Hynes, Michael Longhurst, David Jones, Arin Arbus, Daniel Sullivan and Joe Mantello.

Recent designs include: Rigoletto (Metropolitan Opera); Annie (Broadway); Nick Payne's If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet with Jake Gyllenhaal (Roundabout Theatre); John Ford's The Broken Heart; Taylor Swift's Speak Now! world tour and The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus 2011 and New York City Shakespeare Festival's King Lear with John Lithgow.

Trained at Yale, she chairs the Department of Design for Stage and Film at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Her many awards include 2004 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, Australia's Helpman and Green Room Awards and an Olivier nomination for Wicked.
